Alicia Pousada, the daughter of
Gallego immigrants, was born in Mt. Kisco, NY and raised in the Hudson River hamlet of Montrose. She received her B. A. in Languages
and Literature (Honors Program) in 1976 from Hunter College, CUNY and her M. A. and Ph. D. in Educational Linguistics in 1978 and 1984, respectively, from
the University of Pennsylvania. During her career, she has carried out sociolinguistic research in the
Puerto Rican communities of North Philadelphia and East Harlem, taught linguistics and language pedagogy in numerous colleges
in New York and New Jersey, served as Title VII bilingual program evaluator in N.Y.C. public schools, and worked as E.S.L. instructor in Adult Basic Education, community college, and private tutoring programs. Since 1987, she has been a professor of linguistics in the English Department of the
College of Humanities at the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras campus and served at different times as ESL Coordinator and Academic Advisor. She currently chairs the
Academic Technology Committee and Linguistic Subcommittee in the English Department. Her publications and presentations focus
on the areas of language policy and language planning, multilingualism, the teaching of English as a Second Language world-wide,
and the use of technology in the classroom.
